John 12: 20-26 - Jesus Predicts His Death

20 Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration 21 paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee. They said, “Sir, we want to meet Jesus.” 22 Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus.

23 Jesus replied, “Now the time has come for the Son of Man[a] to enter into his glory. 24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives. 25 Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. 26 Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honour anyone who serves me.

Reflection:

This is an interesting passage in the run up to Jesus’ crucifixion. Philip and Andrew both have Greek names and it is to Philip the Greeks speak, asking to meet Jesus. They were quite probably God fearers, people who worshiped the one true God. It’s almost as if the mission to non Jews was already beginning.

However the central thrust of the passage is Jesus speaking to the assembled crowd about his imminent death. He knew what was going to happen to him. But as his analogy of a plant producing seeds then dying, points out his death would be fruitful. It paved the way for a harvest of people who would have eternal life with Christ in heaven.

Jesus certainly would not have been looking forward to what was going to happen. Similarly there will be times when we will be fearful or anxious about what is round the corner in our lives. It’s good to remember that God knows what it is like to fearful or anxious. He is able to empathise with us and give us the strength we need.

Loving Lord,

Thank you that you know exactly what it is like to be human. What it is like to be frightened and anxious. Please strengthen me during the difficult times, and grant me peace. Amen
