St. John the Baptist - Greatham
Greatham is a lively, attractive village in the south of Hartlepool with a diverse population. It has a nationally acclaimed C of E Primary School with an inspirational head teacher and a young, enthusiastic staff. Special community events are held regularly in the village.
The historic church, built between 1180 and 1190 and subsequently redeveloped, is in good condition.
In the last five years, there has been an effort to reach out to the more elderly demographic, particularly with the Stichell House Care Home which is run by The Hospital of God. There have been retreats and quiet days organised for other parishes.
We have strengthened our links with Greatham School, and with the Hospital of God. Members of our congregation have been involved with other villagers in charitable and community events e.g. Greatham Feast, a week of activities based around the Feast of St John the Baptist, our patron, Snowdrop Sunday, and Greatham in Bloom. We have undertaken fund-raising to replace our church boiler.
Our electoral roll stands at 62.
Greatham is a village with a population of 1500, located in the south of Hartlepool with easy access to the A689, the major route into the town. It is within 3 miles of Seaton Carew. Adjacent to the village there is a major planned development at South Fens, which will significantly increase the population of our parish.
The village has a thriving community centre at its heart. It provides activities for all ages, including a youth club, and is the venue for the village pantomime. The village has 2 pubs as well as a shop. Up until recently there was a post office, which may well re-open. There is a regular bus service linking the village to Hartlepool and to the rest of Teesside.
People in the village generally travel to work. The major employer in the village is The Hospital of God, a charitable trust established in the C12th.
There is a good mix of houses rented by The Hospital of God, and by the local authority, as well as a range of owner occupied properties. 25% of the population are retired, and unemployment is currently slightly higher than the national average.
Church and the community
A major strength for Greatham church is the faithful and welcoming congregation. We have good lay involvement in our services, an historic, beautiful, well maintained church, and an excellent church school in the parish.
The village community makes good use of the church for baptisms, weddings and funerals and many feel a sense of connection without regularly attending services. This must offer potential for growth. School services in church for Christmas, Easter, Harvest and for the annual leavers service are always packed. This is a further opportunity for growth.
